The Search For Ramsus
article by Hyuga
Ever since the first person made it to the end of Xenogears, the rumors of the great and glorious Ramsus being a hidden character in the game were on the Net. Many people said "Why not? Elly is gone, there's a spot open, Ramsus has changed and Zephyr said that he was still around. Fei answers that he'd like to fight with Ramsus again if ever possible, but as a friendly fight." Some people took this seriously and spent hours upon hours trying various hoaxes that promised that Ramsus would join. The mess got so big, that every fourth letter I get is about him and other hidden characters (25% are on Episode V, another 25% on XG2). Now, I bring you proof of Ramsus not being a hidden character.

My tale of truth starts out at my computer terminal. Surfing the Net to see where I may find clues to where Ramsus was. I started my search on The Nisan Sanctuary (before I became a staffer). Here, I searched thoroughly for Ramsus. Nutz even had mentioned the he was going to rub elbows with us again in the Mailbag section. My outbox flew open and I just couldn't stop myself from asking where. A few days later, my reply came. She had meant an earlier meeting in Shevat with Zephyr on Disc 1, not the Disc 2 meeting mentioned earlier. Sadly, I concluded that Ramsus was never going to be in my hands. But, as a last hope of sorts, I ran into a GameShark website. Could it be? The answers to my questions? Yes, but they weren't the ones I hoped for.

Now, Squaresoft has made an official statement that Ramsus, Maing, Franz, Dominia and any other characters outside of your usual 9 weren't available. Didn't stop me and almost every other player. Back to the GameShark, this tool is quite useful for ripping open every aspect of XenoGears, and unless you're careful, could screw up your game (in terms of freezing and not ebing able to proceed). Nevertheless, I tried and tried different codes to get new results from my GameShark and my copy of XenoGears. No luck with Ramsus, but I did get some interesting results that proved my new theory that he couldn't be accessed, or any other character for that matter.

First, I tried the All Items code. This one is quite strange, as it can give you many items that weren't available earlier. Items that gave you all the deathblows, regardless of level. Another one that gave you 10 copies of every item, including weapons. Use it again, and you get the number upped back to 10. Some new weapons were obtained that way. But, a side effect was shop menus. Character icons just didn't show up right. They showed all the faces, regardless of who you really had. I had all 9 faces plus two more. Another Citan, probably because of him later becoming a swordsman. And a second Emerelda, her grown up icon. That was it, besides a really strange light beam on the bottom of the screen (get the code to see what I mean). No Ramsus icon. Also, this filled up my character list. No Ramsus. However, this tool can be used for odd combos of characters. I went to Duneman with Fei, Citan, and Citan with sword. I've also added Elly to my team at the end o the game. But, no Ramsus. The code also gave me all Gears. No Wyvern or Vendetta. So, no Ramsus.

Next I tried a really fun code, Gear swapping. Change your character's Gear. Make a team of Weltall, Weltall 2 and Xenogears. Have Fenrir, Heimdal, and sword Heimdal together in one battle. Make Fei pilot Vierge, Andvari, or even Fenrir. Emerelda in Renmzuo? It happens. Team of Fenrir, Fenrir, and Fenrir? Yup. Vendetta or Wyvern available through this? No. This used hexadecimal language for the Gear Modifier code, so I decided to try and get Ramsus' Gear out as a hint to him being a real, playable character. No luck. I could, using certain codes to avoid freezing, use Regrs, Yggdrasil IV and Ally Gears (those red ones based on Brigandier found on the Yggdrasil). There was no code for Ramsus' Gear, so I decided to investigate further. I input the next digits from the last Gear on the code sheet, plus tried some more after that. Nothing. Literally, it said that Bart had no Gear when I checked. The game froze a minute later. So, the search continued without a GameShark.

By now, I was totally convinced that he was never going to be mine. What I wanted now was to find him, at least get that meeting that Zephyr had mentioned earlier and get Fei to at least offer him a challenge for later. No one. First off, I checked the Yggdrasil. No one. They had showed him in the nurse's office. Empty of Kahr Ramsus. I checked literally every inch of the ship. Not even a speck of his blood. I went to the Gear hangar, and checked out every garage type thing. If you exit the hangar and come back, new ones are opened and closed. I checked every one, all in vain. He wasn't on my airliner. I then proceeded to check out my crashed Shevat, again failing. The Lighthouse, nothing. The only other place left, outside of Merkava, which I had check earlier too, was Citan's Manor. Zippo. Nada. Nil. The only thing found there was Midori's Ring. Very few people know that the ring can be gotten anytime, even at the end of the game. But no Ramsus. He had disappeared.

So I now have proven to you that Ramsus was not available. Some screens will accompany The Search for Ramsus v2.0. He's nowhere. Not at all. Nothing. He has disappeared. Gone. The search continues, but there may be no hope.
